The DLC released LUNA V1.0 in December and began accepting applications from solid-state lighting (SSL) manufacturers interested in qualifying their products in April. It’s our goal to provide a trusted, impartial assessment of the industry’s highest performing lighting products and systems to boost consumer trust and adoption of the technologies that save the most energy. In addition to meeting the DLC’s SSL V5.1 efficacy thresholds, LUNA-qualified products must comply with additional dimming, control and shielding requirements to ensure efficient use of lighting energy. For various reasons, from high initial costs to inadequate training and unfamiliarity with the technology, energy saving networked lighting controls (NLC) have yet to catch on in a significant way. In fact, the Department of Energy reports that less than one percent of all commercial luminaires in the US are equipped with NLCs. Networked lighting controls (NLC) have vast potential for not only energy efficiency and energy management, but for building optimization and functionality. The V2.1 policy defines externally supplied actively cooled horticultural fixtures as those in which liquid, often water or a water/glycol solution, flows through input and output ports of each fixture in the system, channeled through a cooling plate or other heat exchanger within the fixture. In adding these products to its Horticultural Lighting Program, the DLC provides descriptions of how to test and report on them to ensure performance comparable to products listed under previous versions of the policy. According to the global independent safety company UL, it features LED and solid state lighting (SSL) products that undergo tests at a DLC-approved lab and comply with "specific performance and energy efficiency criteria." For over 10 years, the DLC has pushed the envelope on energy efficiency in commercial lighting.
Using Connecticut and Arizona as regional models, the study concluded that the benefits of acquiring all cost-effective savings from NLCs would be significant enough to make a noticeable impact on utility efficiency program budgets. Businesses in Connecticut could receive almost $1.2 billion in net benefits by 2030, while businesses in Arizona could receive net benefits of $217 million. DLC has specific technical requirements that lamps and fixtures must meet for inclusion on the QPL. The Design Lights Consortium is actually a project of the Northeast Energy Efficient Partnership (NEEP) that was founded back in 1996. The nonprofit works to increase energy efficiency in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic areas of the US by reducing energy use in buildings, increasing the visibility of energy efficiency, and advancing knowledge and best practices.
A summary of the study, which emphasizes the value of pairing NLCs with HVAC systems in large commercial buildings, is posted on the DLC website. The DLC is a nonprofit organization dedicated to accelerating the widespread adoption of high-performing commercial lighting solutions. The DLC promotes high-quality, energy-efficient lighting products in collaboration with utilities and energy-efficiency program members; manufacturers; lighting designers; and federal, state, and local entities.
